On April 23, Martin O’Malley, former governor of Maryland and former mayor of Baltimore, shared his infectious energy and passion for new ways of governing with students in SPA’s Accelerated Master of Public Administration program.
O’Malley, who was a Democratic candidate for president in 2016, is perhaps best known for the innovative data-driven accountability infrastructures he created in Baltimore (CitiStat) and in Maryland (StateStat). O’Malley is an evangelist for better governance through better data and accountability, and cities around the world are building on his ideas. O’Malley emphasized that using data and mapping techniques to drive better policy outcomes requires strong leadership and an ongoing commitment of energy, but that a culture of smart governing can build upon itself.
Thanks to SPA alum and current Boulder County Treasurer Paul Weissmann (MPA 2006) for helping make this connection for our students!
