1. Policy Announcement, Fed Hiring Freeze
As you know, President Trump issued a memorandum that enacted a hiring freeze for all executive branch agencies.  Remember that previous administrations have implemented federal employee hiring freezes that eventually were lifted.  The federal government will always need talented applicants.  Please consider these suggestions and information.

2. Paid Summer D.C. Internship
The Fund for American Studies/DC Internships offers guaranteed internship placement with a national nonprofit; $1,500 scholarship; fundraising and service projects that count towards the CNP; furnished housing on George Washington University’s campus; a variety of guest lectures and briefings;  and opportunities for professional development and networking. Apply Now.  Priority deadline is February 8th!

3. Paid Internship: The Student Government Association College Council
They are seeking an SPA student representative.  It’s a paid position $12 per hour, and requires approximately 5 hours a week. The representative would be expected to attend Senate meetings on Fridays from 12:30 to 2:30 pm, as well as the College Council meeting which is yet to be scheduled. The college council representative serves as an intermediary between Student Government and University administration. We need an SPA student to advocate for our programs and students’ needs.  The position is open for the Spring 2017 semester and Fall 2017- Spring 2018 academic year.  Please contact Britni Dawson-Giles for details.

4. Career Opportunity
The City of Thornton is seeking application for Police Officer Recruits. Deadline to apply is February 13. Details online.

5. Social Justice Career Opportunity
The Community Wealth Building Network, an organization supporting social and economic justice, is hiring its first paid position!  They asked SPA students to apply.  The position will help community networks understand how the different parts of the community wealth building “ecosystem” in Metro Denver fit together, plan for strengthening the connections between these parts, and document investment opportunities. 6. Public Safety Career Fair
The Public Safety Career and Networking Expo will take place on February 23 at the Police Protective Association in Denver. Representatives from emergency management, fire, police and public safety organizations will be recruiting for current and future positions. Details online.

7. International Opportunity
SPA graduate students are eligible to participate in CBHS 6633: Intensive Study of Public Health Services in Cuba. The deadline for applications for the CSPH global health class Intensive Study of Public Health Services in Cuba is fast approaching. The 3-credit class includes online readings, online discussions, 3 seminars during the spring semester, a 2 week trip to Cuba (May 19-30, 2017), and follow-up coursework in June. The class is arranged in collaboration with the Cuban National School of Public Health. More information about the class, including how to apply, contact: Joan O’Connell, PhD.

8. Free Research Training Workshops
Auraria Library’s Professional Research Librarians are offering workshops throughout the spring semester. Examples include: effective data management; publishing your research, and data visualization. Details and free registration online.

The following will be held in the Lawrence Street Center, 1380 Lawrence Street, 5th Floor Classroom:

  • Cost/Benefit Workshop with Dean Teske
    Monday February 6, 11:45-1:00 PM (brown bag).
  • Beginner Excel Workshop with PhD Candidate, Sam Gallaher
    Excel navigation tips, sorting, filtering, and data cleaning, loading data form a .txt file and basic functions such as Sum, Average, Min, Max, and Standard Deviation, and intro to advanced functions such as VLOOKUP and Pivot Tables. Friday February 10, 12:00 PM – 2:00 PM (brown bag).
  • Project Management with Daniel Talero, certified PMP and MPA Alumni
    Friday February 17, 12:00 PM – 1:30 PM (brown bag).
  • The Role of Political Consultants in the 21st Century with scholar and author Dennis Johnson
    Monday February 20, 11:45-1:00 p.m. (lunch provided).
  • Intermediate Excel Workshop with PhD Candidate, Sam Gallaher
    Advanced sorting and data cleaning techniques, basic statistical functions, and table and chart generation. Friday February 24. 12:00 PM – 2:00 PM (brown bag).
